What is a Quarter Auction

What is a Quarter Auction

The Lantana Ladies League is known for its crazy events but the quarter auction is in a class by itself.

Lantana resident Krista Middleton was in charge of the auction. The LLL annual event raised over $2500 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The donation was matched by another donor on Giving Day, raising $5000 for JDRF.

“I was diagnosed with diabetes as a baby,” said Krista. “It’s a cause that’s very important to me.”

Held at the Lantana Golf Club, the LLL Quarter Auction runs like this: participants come in the door and purchase a paddle. Each paddle has a number that has a corresponding poker chip that goes into a box for drawing. Some participants purchase additional paddles for increased chances of winning. As prizes come up for auction, each bid is a quarter (per paddle) allowing guests to get great prizes for as little as twenty-five cents.

“All of the people running around the room collecting the quarters into buckets were people who have Type 1 Diabetes,” said Krista. “That way every single time someone dropped their quarters into the buckets, they were giving it to someone that would directly benefit from it.”

Over 60 items and door prizes were obtained from vendors including Fixd, who donated free furnace tunes ups for everyone who walked in the door. Other vendors included LuLaRoe, Scentsy and custom t-shirts by Lantana resident Jessica Marr.

The final item of the night was a custom outdoor TV cabinet, valued at $750, handmade by Krista’s husband, a professional carpenter.

“It had shutters for protection and someone got it for four quarters,” said Krista. “It gets crazy in there but everyone has a great time for a great cause.”
