The Denton County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to be extra cautious as the start of the new school year approaches. Here are a few tips for drivers as well as students:

While Driving in School Zones

  • Remain alert at all times.
  • Do not use your cell phones. Cell phones are banned in active school zones and violators will be fined up to $200.
  • Obey school zone speed limits.  Remember, traffic fines double in school zones.
  • Drop off and pick up your children in the school’s designated areas.
  • Watch for students gathering at bus stops.
  • Be on the lookout for students who may be crossing the street or walking between vehicles near schools.
  • Obey traffic rules, signs and signals.

Students Walking or Biking to School:

  • Only cross at intersections and designated crosswalks.
  • Only walk on sidewalks, whenever they are available.
  • Look for traffic when stepping off of a bus or from behind parked cars.
  • Never assume drivers see you, make eye contact before crossing the street.
  • Obey crossing guards.
  • Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
  • When walking, do not be distracted by electronic devices such as cell phones.
  • Obey all traffic rules, signs and signals.
